I peer thru the window, the sun shines so bright,
The backyard is empty but still in my sight,
I see all my children who brought so much light
Echoes of yesterday that gave such delight.
I stare at this place now it looms in my sight.
I hear the gate open, each voice with delight.
Each child now emerges, a basketball near
Shooting at hoop now each voice loud and clear
They enter so swiftly, from whence do they come?
Awaken!! The face of my own smiling son.
He gulps down his breakfast, then runs out to door
Begins a new venture, each day like before.
So many years now, these boys have been free
To enter our "kingdom." Some days "one" brings "three."
I ask of my husband, "Will that spot always be
So barren, so empty, no grass shall it see?"
His answer is merely a smile back at me.
His wisdom is deeper than waves of the sea.
Footprints now enter my shiny clean floor
Making their mark to the "ole fridge" door.
"May we please have drinks, Mom? About twenty-four?
I nod and so quickly it's lunchtime before...
I can say, "Are you hungry?" They're back at the door,
Awaiting that sandwich they do now implore.
How quickly these boys grew up to be men.
I yearn for their voices, to see their sweet grins.
Our "kingdom," So silent, my smile very "thin."
My husband's great wisdom proved right once again.
The lawn is so perfect.
It never will change
The spot may be empty
But Love will Remain
