It was still dark outside. The skies were dotted with the brilliant shades of white from untold numbers of stars. Then, without notice or fanfare, the stars winked away, blotted out by the massive size of alien spacecraft.
In short order afterward, it is clear to humanity that life as they know it will forever be changed. Not as they feared, but rather in many positive ways. No more wars, no hunger, nearly non-existent crime. All controlled by the Overlords and their seemingly all-knowing abilities.
Communicating through the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Alien leader, Karellen, watched man as he learned to live with the ever present spaceships hovering above cities worldwide. But they never show themselves.
And mankind wants to know why. And taking the Secretary General might force them to reveal themselves. But then, aren’t the aliens thought to be all-knowing? The kidnappers have to take that chance…
The US and Soviets are in the middle of a heated race to the stars when the massive Overlord spaceships enter Earth’s atmosphere, and hover over many of the world’s major cities and capitals.
Frightened at first, the individual countries felt insignificant and were fearful of what was to come. But as time passed, the Overlords made contact with the UN Secretary General, and through him, mankind was informed that the Overlords were there to guide them, to help them achieve peace and to end the world’s troubles.
They never showed themselves, only speaking through the Secretary General and a movement arose, rebelling against the mightier-than-thou actions of the aliens. Answers were demanded as to why they were really here, what they looked like, and why they won’t show themselves.
Man has stagnated. Scientific advancements and artistic expressions are virtually non-existent since the Overlords are solving man’s needs for them. No crime. No famine. The Overlords are creating a single government for the entire planet by forcing the issue with their quiet, seemingly passive observation and monitoring of man.
A few days from the end of his term, the Secretary General decides he needs to have at least one answer. What do they look like? With the help of a scientist, a device is created that will allow him to see the alien during his weekly meetings aboard an Alien ship.
Now all he needs to do is turn on the device without being caught and he’d know. But what will happen to him if he’s caught? He finds out that the Overlords will reveal themselves in fifty years – long after he’s dead. So, he decides he must flip the switch.
The world has changed in the last hundred years since the Overlords arrived. And now, something is happening. The Overlords can see it starting. But man has been sheltered so long they don’t see it for themselves. It will all be over soon, and Homo sapiens will be extinct.
