Here is the one and only attempt Denney has ever made at poetry but after losing so many brothers and sisters in his career, he just wrote it one night. He said he thought I might like to read it.

**I find this to be one of the most touching poems I have ever read. Thanks Denney.
            Samantha.**

Twenty Three Years now I've served the Thin Blue Line
            I've pinned a badge on a uniform,
Like so many of my Brothers and Sisters before me,
And faced the horrors that we all see.

You may walk out the door and never go back
But you leave each place...not completely intact
Cause you gave part of yourself when you were there
But looking back on it all...it somehow seems fair.

You had a few drinks with friends that seemed so harmless
You say you didn't see the other vehicle in the night
Your victim is Sixteen years old and so young,
I hold her in my arms until God sees her life done.

The pressures of life are greatly enlarged for a teen
Life seems so complicated and troubles many
I arrive and study your lifeless form,
And wish I could have helped with your violent storm.

A simple party that was to be so much fun
Take this pill and see what you think
one time won't hurt and it'll make you so high,
Now I must try to tell your parents what made you die.

I sit in roll call and joke and laugh with my family
Then we hit the streets and do our best
A traffic offender is running way to fast
Silence and then I hear that a brother has crashed and breathed his last.

We deal with life and death each day
It's a job that we chose and know must be done
Sometimes it's hard to go home and forget what we've seen
The facts of the streets can be so mean.

Our families will never fully understand
Why we change from mood to mood
We are human too and must harbor all the memories,
For dealing with these there are no immediate remedies.

Each time we hear of a fallen comrade
It doesn't matter if near or far
We all know that a piece of the thin blue line has broken
We are family anywhere, with no words having to be spoken.

After twenty three years I go to work each day
I know that all of the ones who have fought the battle before
Are supporting me and giving me their might,
And each of them are riding on my right.

No matter how hard the fight within us
Remember that God and our convictions are with us always
Never forget what you have seen and done,
For in the name of Honor, we will never run.

To each of my fallen brothers and sisters
We will one day meet again
To cry, laugh, and remember what we have seen,
Till that time, I'll keep my senses keen.

You have watched me fight the battles
And it didn't matter if I lost or won
For no greater words could I hear from you all,
Than thank you Officer, from the names on the Wall.

I miss them all and thank them for the examples they each gave to me and for the sacrifice they all made for the Thin Blue Line!
