In the beginning, it was dark. There were two entities, both mercenaries, and they met on opposite sides of the same contract. On one side was Michel Riss. On the other side was Friedrich von Baldur. And the two came together, and that ended the first day and night… although Michel was the only one to walk away consciously….
And weeks later, the two met again, and came into agreement that they should work together, combining their talents. And Star Risk, Ltd. was born of their union.
After recruiting a couple more members, one of which was willing to invest his own money into the venture, Star Risk, Ltd. went looking for a contract. Their new intelligence person finds a likely candidate in a technology enhanced ex-marine named Chas Goodnight who is stuck in a death row prison on a planet awaiting execution due to his attempted theft from a museum.
If stealing jewels was punishable by death, what was the penalty for breaking someone out of prison? And if they’re successful, will Mr. Goodnight join their ranks and help influence his brother into giving Star Risk, Ltd., a contract to protect space miners and transports from pirates? The answer is unclear, but for now, they had their mission: Free Chas Goodnight…
Michel Riss is a mercenary on a mission to recover a young girl whose mother wants to see her. Friedrich von Baldur is a mercenary contracted to prevent it from happening. And when they meet up during the attempt, Michel Krocker Baldur out and makes away with the prize. Nice. Very nice. But the mother doesn’t pay off.
Now with Michel broke and hungry, she runs into Friedrich again, this time in a job interview. With both their talents and combined experience, they join together to bring Star Risk, Ltd. to reality.
Very soon after, a woman arrives to offer her services as an intelligence agent. She brings along an alien with significant capital to invest into the venture.
Now, they have a base of operations, an expense account, and intelligence. All they needed was a contract. They find a mining company that needs security for their facilities and their contracted miners, and then make plans to obtain that security contract.
But before they can go after it, they want an edge. And that edge comes in the form of Chas Goodnight, a bio-enhanced marine called a ‘Bester’. The only problem is that Mr. Goodnight is in prison awaiting execution for attempting to steal jewels from the planet’s museum.
The big question is now how to get him out alive, and escape safely without being killed by the prison’s automated defense systems or the guards….
Perhaps that’s why they’re called mercenaries…
